Ever closer: travel stories inside the districts of Milan and Rome 2020 - 2021

If there is one word that can describe today's city, that word is "proximity". The feeling that the area in which one lives is the neighbourhood, and that the neighbourhood is people, activities and initiatives. So neighbourhoods take on an important role, because it is in their midst that a unified narrative of the city is constructed, so that the city takes on the appearance of a novel in which each neighbourhood is a character and a chapter, a small centre among the many it sits alongside. In order to get to know our new cities, we need to start from here, from the neighbourhoods, the areas and the people who make them up, the true makers and players in urban life.

Leonardo Leuci

Jerry Thomas Speakeasy Owner & Roma Bar Show Founder

I started working as a bartender like many young Italians: at 16 years old I was looking for a job to pay my first holidays alone and buy my first Vespa. With the money I saved, I decided to go on a trip to Cuba before the university began. Getting in touch with that tropical reality was amazing, for the first time in my life I realized the social importance of cocktails and bartenders. At 23 years old, despite having earned a degree in Business & Administration, I decided to start working as a bartender with an international chain of hotels & resorts and discover the world through this job. I worked in several caribbean countries (Cuba, Martinique, Mexico, St Lucia Island). A lot of my friends used to call me the “Globetrotter Bartender “. I came back to Rome to work as a bar manager for Supperclub Rome, one of the most important and innovative club companies in the world. During my first year, the bar of Supperclub won numerous national and international awards, like Condé Nast World Best Bar and others. After my experience at Supperclub Rome, I decided to start travelling again around the world, then in 2009 I returned to Italy where I started the Jerry Thomas Project Rome, a consulting and professional training company, with my friends Roberto Artusio, Antonio Parlapiano and Alessandro Procoli. In April 2010 we opened the Jerry Thomas Speakeasy Rome and after only 2 years the bar was on the list of the 25 Best Bar at Cocktails Spirits Paris, and in 2013 we were included in the prestigious World's 50 Best Bars list, which is announced every year in London. In 2012, we started the Vermouth Del Professore production, a small, very artisanal production of an Italian classic product. Our Vermouth Del Professore is now exported in 10 countries and considered one of the best artisanal products in the world. I am also a professional sommelier and a member of A.I.S (Italian Sommeliers Association). One of my hobbies is to collect rare bottles, rare books and rare tools, and my favourite drink ever is the Daiquiri.
