Villages and Inland Areas as Centres of Attention, What are the Actual Prospects?

05/10/21 h 11:00 - 12:00

The health emergency has turned the spotlight onto villages and inland areas not only as tourist destinations, which host current needs for demand, but also as attractive places for new forms of residence, under a banner of quality of life. The Touring Club Italiano, which has been promoting sustainable tourism development in small inland towns for 23 years through its Bandiere Arancioni (Orange Flags) programme and accompanying them on the path of continuous improvement, explores the actual prospects for revitalising small towns in inland areas, also in relation to rethinking their relationship with cities.

Speakers

Stefano Boeri

Architect and urban planner

Full Professor of Urban Planning at Milan Polytechnic University, Stefano teaches as a guest lecturer at several international universities. He was the City of Milan Councillor for Culture, Fashion and Design from 2011 to 2013 and has been a curator for numerous international exhibitions as well as President of Triennale Milano since 2018. With offices in Shanghai and Milan, the Stefano Boeri Architetti firm’s work ranges from producing urban visions to architecture, focusing firmly on the geopolitical and environmental implications of urban phenomena. Focusing on the relationship between city and nature led to the construction of Milan’s Vertical Forest in 2014, the first residential building prototype which houses over 700 trees and 20,000 plants. In 2016, the firm helped rebuild the towns of Amatrice and Norcia, struck by an earthquake, and is currently working on urban development plans for Castelsantangelo sul Nera and Arquata del Tronto. Stefano Boeri is co-chair of the World Form on Urban Forests scientific committee and, since 2020, has been Chair of the Forestami Scientific Committee, a project aiming to plant 3 million trees in the Milan metropolitan area by 2030.
